New Canaan Rams Travel Softball (NC Rams) and the newly formed Connecticut Rams (CT Rams) are co-hosting tryouts for the 2019-20 12u season at 7-9pm on Monday, August 12th at Waveny Park Orchard Field.

New Canaan Softball strives to provide opportunities for personal growth and development of youth athletes while also reinforcing self-confidence, self-esteem and the ability to excel on and off the field.  Through participation, New Canaan Softball is dedicated to educating and motivating players while encouraging teamwork, community involvement, sportsmanship and fun through the spirit of fastpitch softball.  

Our travel programs are designed to maximize the physical and mental potential of every athlete. We provide year-round professional and volunteer coaching for pitching, catching, infield, outfield and hitting with an additional focus on in and off season strength and conditioning.

A CT Rams and NC Rams Travel Softball Player Should:

12U Travel Team Options for Tryouts:  We are now offering tryouts for two different New Canaan based 12u programs to fit the goals of individual players and their families.  When registering your player for our combined tryout, please select the team she is trying out for:  “CT Rams”, “NC Rams” or “Trying Out to Be Placed on Either Team”.

Note: New Canaan Softball reserves the right to refashion the structure of each team after tryouts based on tryout participation and skill level.

 

Connecticut Rams Tournament Team: For those players and families looking for a professionally coached “elite” team to play the highest level competition against some of the best programs in the northeast region. Tournament play is the focus of this team and will occur over many weekends throughout the year (roughly 5 games a weekend) with the most play during the summer months. The overall goal of the program is to develop girls into the best players they can be with the strongest possible understanding of the game for their age. 

A tournament player should begin to exhibit and want to reach the next level of:

  • Strong emotional control and the ability to cope with stress or failure
  • Game sense / decision making
  • Understanding of game situations
  • Power, Speed, Coordination, Arm Strength, and Bat Speed
  • Advanced technical skills in Hitting, Fielding, Throwing, Short game and Base-running

The CT Rams are planning the following for the 2019-20 season:

  • (2) Fall Tournaments  - with practices 1-2x week
  • (1) Winter Tournament - with practices 1x week plus pitcher/catchers 1x week
  • (3-4) Spring Tournaments (some of these will be overnight, or multi-night events) - with outdoor practice 2-3x per week
  • (TBD) FCFSL League Games will vary. Used for tune-ups before tourney play
  • (4-6) Summer Tournaments (some of these will be overnight, or multi-night events during weekends). USSSA & USA tourneys to be selected in early 2020.

Participants: CT Rams tryouts are open to New Canaan players and players from neighboring communities.  The CT Rams Tournament team will carry a higher percentage of non-New Canaan girls than our NC Rams Travel team. 

Coaching: The CT Rams will maintain two professional coaches on staff, Rita Jagodzinski (see bio) and Kara Orr (see bio). The team will also be professionally instructed by Pam Mazzarella (see bio) and Alex Miller (see bio).  A volunteer team manager will be named after the team is formed. 

Cost: The annual cost for the CT Rams program will be higher compared to a town travel team. Fees TBA after tryouts. Will includes September thru July expenses covering professional coaches, umpire fees, tournament fees, indoor facility rentals, winter strength & conditioning, uniforms, insurance, league registrations and basic team equipment. Individual family fundraising opportunities will be made available to defray costs, as needed.

Location:  Practices to be held at Waveny Park in New Canaan throughout the Fall, Spring and Summer. Winter into Spring training location TBA and will include strength & conditioning classes, skills clinics, pitching/catcher training as well as team practices.

12U New Canaan Town Travel Team: For those players and families looking to compete at a higher level as compared to the town’s recreational Little League program without the time commitment or level of expectation of a Tournament Elite Team. The team will focus on hosting and traveling to local county league games, and they will attend tournaments mostly within driving distance. The majority of games will be played in the Spring and Summer months with some Fall match-ups. The overall goal of the program is to develop the girls beyond their 12u rec experience as they represent our town in competitive play. 

A town travel player should begin to exhibit and want to reach the next level of:

  • Competition and Desire To Win 
  • Positive Attitude and Willingness to Be Pushed to The Next Level
  • Strong Fundamentals of The Game - Hitting, Fielding, Catching, Throwing, Pitching
  • Commitment to the Game - Can Show up to 80% of Practices and Games in the Spring & Summer Months (Our Core Seasons)

The NC Rams are planning the following for the 2019-20 season (Sept thru July):

  • (1) Fall Tournament  
  • (5-8) Fall Games - with practices 1x week
  • (1) Winter Tournament - with practices 1x week plus pitcher/catchers 1x week
  • Winter Training - Optional but recommended Strength and Conditioning 1x week
  • (1-2) Spring Tournaments 
  • (3-5) Spring FCFSL League Games - April thru mid-June with practice 1x/week
  • (7-10) Summer FCFSL League Games - Mid June thru end of July -  practice 2x/week
  • (2-3) Summer Tournaments (usually one will be overnight with the rest driving distance over the course of a weekend). B & C level tourneys to be selected in early 2020.
  • Note: This team may look to compete in the Little League District All-Star Tournament in lieu of a summer tournament should the majority of players qualify as voted in by their rec coaches. This elimination style event takes place the last week of June thru July.

Participants: NC Rams tryouts are open to New Canaan players and players from neighboring communities only as neededNC Rams players are required to fully participate in the town’s recreational Little League program. 

Coaching: The NC Rams will maintain two professional coaches on staff and up to two volunteer parent coaches. No more than (3) coaches will be allowed in the dugout during games.

Cost: $1,100-1,400 per player (TBA after tryouts). The annual costs for the NC Rams program includes September thru July expenses from professional coaches, umpire fees, tournament fees, indoor facility rentals, winter workouts, uniforms, insurance, league registrations and basic team equipment. Individual family fundraising opportunities will be made available to defray costs, as needed.
